Art Department

Welcome to the Bishop Mackenzie International School Visual Arts Department. Students from primary through secondary benefit from visual art classes through the PYP, MYP and DP. As an IB school, the Visual Arts Department teachers are committed to creating an open-minded environment where students are encouraged to develop their creativity and a visual language. Students learn to think and express themselves visually.BMIS students will learn a variety of skills and techniques that will allow them to produce work that shows in-depth knowledge of concepts, ideas, issues and theories that have local and global significance. Students will learn critical thinking to solve creative problems. In the department, they will use skills, techniques, materials and art styles that push their boundaries and compel them to become risk-takers.

Through their learning experiences, students will develop personal expression, imagination, sensitivity, conceptual thinking, power of observation, an analytical ability and practical attitudes. Students will show an increasingly wider understanding of the role of visual arts across time and cultures.

The Visual Arts Department has a wide and varied amount of resources to enable students to explore different mediums. These include: a kiln for clay work; wet and dry mediums; photography; a separate studio space for DP students; and a department library with a wide range of visual art reference books.
The Visual Arts Department raises environmental awareness by encouraging students to recycle and reuse materials to create their art projects.

Through exhibiting their work around campus and a final exhibition (DP), students not only share and reflect upon their perspective, but they also develop self-confidence and a deeper appreciation of the art.
